17-20 March 2006 Nikon Day
Attended the Nikon Day 2006 located at floor 1 Siam Paragon Bangkok, Thailand. I said floor 1 because it’s actually the 3rd floor since there is G floor and M floor whatever that is. Attended by hundreds of photographers ranging from “just shoot”-ers, amateurs up to professionals with neck straps which read “Press”. After a long walk searching for the location I finally found the event and started registering my Nikon D70s for the door prize. I took couples (with an ’s’ meaning I grabbed a bunch of Nikon stickers =P) and took lots and lots of brochures. First I holded the brochures and had difficulty with it since i’m also holding my camera until an nice Nikon staff women offered me a bag saying “Nikon D70s”. These staffs knows their product for sure since she saw my D70s beforehand and took exactly the right bag for me. The event consist of several booths around the mini catwalk as you can see in the gallery. After registering, I went looking for digital SLRs but couldn’t find any but finally figured out its in the Film SLR section. I handheld a 80-400mm VR Nikkor lens with D2x body. It felt sturdy and really heavy I had difficulties just holding them straight. Despite having the VR system, I still get lots of camera shakes at 200mm or more.. maybe I should practice more on this. On the right hand side was glassboxes containing the binoculars and coolpix (I was never interested in it so I skipped these parts), Digital SLRs containing D70s, D200, D50, accessories and lenses (see my gallery for the picture) also at the very end Professional Digital SLRs containing D2X, D2Hs and really cool zoom lenses. Then I went to the software booth where they show Nikon SLR’s professional softwares such as Nikon Capture 4.4. It wasn’t all that great since I already have it installed on my powerbook but never actually used it. I went to the rear section where they show the zoom lenses in action (see my gallery for the picture) I tried it out, mostly the lenses are mounted on D200s with vertical grips or D2Xs. On the opposite of the registration and entrance section they showed the gallery of contestants of the “Yellow to Me” National Geographic contest. I wonder why the winner’s picture (A shot by an Indonesian named Andri Irawan showing a little girl during Eid) wasn’t shown there, in fact none of the contestants I see in the web was shown there, it was only pictures by indian photographers… hmm… around there was also a museum of some old Nikon SLR cameras. After around an hour of browsing the event, the main show started, I took couples of shots (actually I spent all my 1gig CF card) as you can see in my gallery. I didn’t have time to set up my camera and left it as the default settings which I fiddled around with the previous night but the results seems to be ok for me. Although I spent hours of practicing setting my camera fast in my room, I was so surprised and felt a little nervous and just took the shots without setting anything! Well who wouldn’t be since this is my first time and I’m surrounded by lots and lots of photographers… I found that photographers tend to be polite and patient with each other although at some particular moments they get rough and start shooting. All in all it was some experience I got, hopefully this could be a good start. Click here to view the gallery.
